Have you ever noticed more hair in your comb or shower drain and wondered if somethingâs wrong? The truth is not all hair loss is the same. Thereâs a big difference between shedding and breakage, and knowing which one youâre dealing with is the first step to restoring healthy, thriving hair and we're going to tell you how.
What Is Shedding?
Shedding is a natural and healthy process. Each strand of hair goes through a growth cycle growth (anagen), rest (telogen), and shedding (exogen). Itâs completely normal to lose 50â100 hairs a day as part of this cycle. Youâll usually notice full strands with the white bulb attached at the root thatâs a sign your hair naturally released from the follicle.
However, excessive shedding can occur due to:
Hormonal changes (postpartum, menopause, thyroid issues)
Stress or illness
Nutritional deficiencies (especially iron, protein, vitamin D, and zinc)
Certain medications
When shedding increases beyond normal, itâs your bodyâs way of signaling an internal imbalance.
What Is Breakage?
Breakage happens when the hair strand itself becomes weak and snaps, usually mid-shaft. You wonât see the white bulb instead, youâll find short, uneven pieces of hair.
Common causes include:
Over-processing (coloring, relaxers, heat styling)
Lack of moisture or protein imbalance
Tight hairstyles (wigs, weaves, braids, excessive styling) that create tension
Using harsh shampoos or not trimming regularly
How to Tell the Difference
White bulbs at the end? Shedding.
Short, brittle pieces? Breakage.
Both? You may be dealing with internal and external stressors.
